About The Great Paignton Paint Out
In September 2023, Paignton’s streets and seafront came alive with art during The Great Paignton Paint Out—two days of “plein air” painting and community creativity. Ten professional artists captured iconic sites such as Paignton Picture House, Palace Avenue, and the historic Harbour, while local residents and visitors alike joined in the fun, exploring their own artistic talents in the open air. From budding young painters to established creatives, participants worked side by side, discovering fresh perspectives on the town and its heritage.
About the Exhibition
This final showcase marks the third in a series of legacy exhibitions celebrating the creativity and heritage sparked by The Great Paignton Paint Out. Over the course of these exhibitions, visitors have encountered newly commissioned works by professional trail artists, a range of community artworks that capture Paignton’s everyday charm, and “tools of the trade” reflecting the hands-on spirit of plein air painting. Now, at Torre Abbey, these elements are presented alongside the Abbey’s own collections, offering a fresh lens through which to explore Torbay’s rich cultural legacy and the dynamic interplay between art and place.
Supporting heritage items provided by the Paignton Heritage Society further illuminate the buildings and landmarks that inspired the artworks, fostering a deeper understanding of the town’s unique history. By witnessing Paignton’s story unfold through creative expression—and seeing how outdoor art can enliven a community—visitors are invited to reflect on how art transforms our connection to local spaces. This exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring impact of collaborative creativity, reminding us that shared artistic experiences can inspire pride, spark new friendships, and leave a lasting legacy long after the final brushstroke is laid down.
What is Plein Air Painting?
“Plein air” is French for “out of doors.” It’s a tradition going back centuries, most famously associated with the Impressionists who sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. Today, it’s embraced by artists of every style—from classic oils to experimental spray paints—who relish painting directly in the landscape. This hands-on approach lets them engage with their surroundings, finding fresh inspiration in real time.
